Fashion Book–Grace Roby from Empire Falls

I finished Richard Russo’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel Empire Falls last week. The book tells the story of mild-mannered diner proprietor Miles Roby and the characters in the small town of Empire Falls, Maine. I couldn’t shake the image of Miles as Luke from “The Gilmore Girls” nearly the entire time I was reading, but whereas Stars Hollow was a charming and privileged enclave of Connecticut, Empire Falls is an industrial town on the brink of ruin as the residents struggle to make ends meet in a town that’s been left behind by modern industry. At the book’s core is Miles’ quest to come to terms with his mother Grace’s death, 20 years before. In one of my favorite parts of the book, he remembers a trip he and his mother took to Martha’s Vineyard when he was a little boy. Though his mother grew to be haggard and sick in middle age, he remembers her as radiantly beautiful on this trip. She buys a white dress that always stands out in his memory, though she never wore it again. I think Grace could have been wearing something like this:
