South x Southwest

2010 March 15
by Jill

I leave for SXSW (South by Southwest) on Wednesday and I couldn’t possibly be more excited to spend 5 days in Austin, eating barbeque, drinking beer, and checking out the more than 1700 bands playing this year. The weather forecast is calling for sunny skies and temps in the 70s–a welcome change from the frigid monsoons that have descended on the Northeast this weekend.

Here are just a few of the bands I’m most looking forward to seeing:

Frightened Rabbit

Delta Spirit

Deer Tick

Broken Social Scene

Surfer Blood

Broken Bells

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Walkmen

She & Him

Miike Snow

Those are not even including the free parties and bands I haven’t yet heard of. It’s going to be a whirlwind week!

Now I need to decide what to pack–I’m so used to wearing tights, boots, and scarves that the thought of bare legs and flip flops is terrifying. How does one pack for a 5-day concert festival? I’m thinking jeans, my trusty Converse All Stars, some flip flops, a few tank tops, and of course, a few dresses, hoodies, and cardigans. Any other suggestions? Has anyone ever been to SXSW and have advice to share?

went to jazz fest last year and my over the shoulder bag was the best thing i packed. carry around layers, sunscreen, and if the set up is at all like jazz fest, a blanket to spread out when you find a good patch of grass. i wore a short khaki skirt one day – bad idea. it made it really hard to sit comfortably. flowy dresses, shorts, and comfortable capris are best. have so much fun, can’t wait to read about it!

Definitely sunscreen. You have spent many months in the sun-deprived north, and the Texan sun is going to wallop you.

Sunglasses and an extra pair of sneakers. Flip flops may not be the best idea at the actual concert due to crowding and sharp items on the ground.
