Fashion Book–Hairstyles of the Damned

Last time I was in New York, I borrowed Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Meno from Joe to read on the bus back to Boston. I was in an angsty mood, and Hairstyles was just what I needed to wallow in memories of my disillusioned adolescence. The book is told in the voice of Brian Oswald, a frustrated 15-year-old on the fringes of his high school in 1990 Chicago. Brian has feelings for his best friend, Gretchen, a girl with dyed pink hair and a penchant for fighting other girls. I felt a little distant from the book at the beginning, due to all of the testosterone, but by the middle, I was feeling more empathy for Brian, as he shifted from friend to friend, just trying to find a place within all of the ugly drama of high school.

I decided to create an outfit I think Gretchen would wear:

Hairstyles of the Damned

Hoodie: Forever 21

Illustrated People Skull T-shirt: Topshop

Unisex Knee-High Socks: American Apparel

Skirt: Forever 21

Boots: Dr. Martens

Backpack: Hot Topic
