Best of the Looks, Best of the Books 5/8/10

2010 May 10

Another late BotL, BotB post–my sincere apologies…but I do have something of an excuse–it was my birthday this weekend! Don’t forget to recommend some stylish new summer sandals for me–I’m actually thinking I should give wedges or platforms a try. What do you think?

This week’s Look of the Week is Tania from What Would a Nerd Wear! The braids are what really gets me–I really want to try something similar with my own hair, now that it’s getting longer, but it’s a little bit of a leap for me. Baby steps. I also love the vintage cardigan belted over the skirt, and those adorable sandals.

Best of the Looks:

The New York Times profiles the best thrifting opportunities in Manhattan.

Check out this short HANDMADE wedding dress at My Edit–it’s lovely!

Kendi has finally finished her 30 for 30 challenge–check out her wrap-up.

Fantastic platform wedges from Pierre Hardy for GAP on The Clothes Horse.

Best of the Books:

One of my favorite blogs, Largehearted Boy, does a feature in which an author is asked to compose a playlist that either inspired their latest book or that they feel encapsulates their characters. This installment of “Book Notes” spotlights Daisy Hay’s new book about the poets of the Romantic era, Young Romantics: The Tangled Lives of English Poetry’s Greatest Generation.

At the Rumpus, Elissa Bassist ruminates about writing and warns against the danger of reading Lorrie Moore too close to bed time.

The New Yorker covers a celebration of moms (just in time for Mother’s Day!) in Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps

One of the icons of my youth, Molly Ringwald, has written a book called Getting the Pretty Back. Read a profile on The Daily Beast.

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend, spent time with the moms in their lives, and soaked up at least a little bit of sunshine.

The NYTimes profiling the best thrifting opportunities means that they will no longer be the best thrifting opportunities.
