Apartment Therapy

2010 August 24

Well, I made it. Thanks for bearing with my little blog hiatus while I packed, moved, and unpacked. We still have a great deal to do, but most of the boxes are empty and broken down, which isn’t bad for two days of unpacking! I love the apartment and Joe and I are both very eager to get it decorated and organized. I thought I would chronicle our apartment decorating a bit on this blog, as I think home design is an aspect of “looks” and of course, our books are going to be a focus in the overall apartment design.

The bedroom seems to be a good starting point. Right now, we don’t have a bed (our mattress is sitting on the floor), which is okay for now, but the under-bed storage is vital when you only have one closet (my shoes are already an issue).  We would also like to get a storage boost by buying a small chest of drawers for the television. Here are a few photos for inspiration:

I need a nightstand by my side of the bed because I put my glasses there, as well as my jewelry, my alarm, and whatever book I’m reading. I like the idea of “his and hers” nightstands on either side of the bed.

Once we get a bed, I’d like to hang some art above it, and I like this cluster of tasteful frames.

I’ve had my dresser since I was a baby, so it’s small and the wooden drawers can be finicky. My mom painted it white and added gold knobs years ago (it was originally yellow), but I’m dying to add some funky and fun knobs to give it some fresh life. I like the idea of scouring flea markets and vintage shops for different knobs rather than paying the $10 a pop for the ones Anthropologie offers.

{Crate and Barrel sheets}

We’d like some new bedding. Here’s a fun article on being creative and layering patterns of sheets–definitely tempted to try it out.

Today is my last day in the apartment before starting my new job tomorrow, so I suppose I should do a little unpacking before taking a walk around the new neighborhood. Stay tuned for more design and decorating inspiration, plus plenty of photos (of the apartment, the city, and outfits!) since Joe got me a beautiful new camera for our anniversary!

Have any bedroom decorating ideas or tips? Leave ’em in the comments please!

    Glad to hear you made it in one piece and are getting settled, Jill! If only you could have a solid two weeks to do nothing but unpack and organize and decorate… it’s all fun stuff, but it takes time. :) Looking forward to seeing what you and Joe come up with!

    I’m definitely liking your inspiration here. I think what I like most about the top photo is that you can do his-and-hers decor without it being altogether matchy-matchy. Maybe a slightly different lamp or nightstand for each of you, so that they complement rather than completely mirror each other?

    I agree about the lamps in the top photo!! I LOVE the one with the teal stand and red shade! I am also an advocate of his and her night stands. A must.

    I’m not in love with the crate & barrel bedding…. too blah for such quirky folks. Excited to see the progress!

    agree with amanda about the bedding. although you could funky it up with some brightly colored pillows and sheets. or, if you painted the walls a really bright color, you could have neutral bedding… and, i do agree his and her night stands are a must! so excited for you :)
