Off the Street

One surprising thing about my neighborhood in Brooklyn is the number of books people put out on their stoops. Since moving in August, I’ve picked up quite a few books from the sidewalk, most of which I’ve really enjoyed. Here are some of the books I’ve scored just while walking from the subway to my apartment:

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

Brooklyn: A Novel by Colm Toibin

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

Best European Fiction 2010 edited by Aleksander Hemon

Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut

Would you pick books up off the street, or do you think I’m a weirdo?

Wow, those are seriously awesome books to score from the sidewalk! I would definitely nab those books. Yet another reason I am jealous that you live in Brooklyn!

I’d actually be interested to hear what you think of The Namesake, if you get a chance to read it.

Dude, people in our neighborhood in Portland leave books/free junk out on the sidewalk ALL THE TIME. I have picked up a book or two, but none as awesome as any of these. My personal favorite score was a bunch of free tomato plant starts someone left out for people to take. Free sustenance! Almost better than books!

JP also has this curious habit! I’ve never picked anything up, but I’ve been tempted. Adding another “thing” to my life has been the deterrent, but I guess I could always just put it back outside 😉
