Best of the Looks, Best of the Books 1/7/11

2011 January 7

New York City looks like a snowglobe this afternoon. I’ve been sick this week, and still feeling a little out of it, but I’m looking forward to a fun weekend of board games, museums, and an 80s-themed birthday party! First, though, it’s the first BotL, BotB of 2011.

Best of the Looks:

I really love Jessica from What I Wore’s fun sweater dress:

I can’t wait to try this DIY nail trick from Simply Sunstar.

I think this Topshop khaki shirtdress would be a great all-season wardrobe staple.

I am impressed by Sarah at Wearing It On My Sleeves and her skirt-making skills! Also, yellow + purple + polka dots = amazing.

You are my Fave has some cute fabric weekenders–I need a new one!

Best of the Books:

Another discussion of the disparity between male and female writers in literary publications such as The New Yorker–an open letter from subscriber Anne Hays.

One of my new year’s resolutions is to read more. Big surprise. Salon has tips on how to be a better reader in 2011.

Several fashion bloggers have started the Pickwick Ladies Book Club–each blogger chooses a new book every month, and then they create looks based on or inspired by that book. So far, they’ve done Little Women and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. If my closet was slightly more eclectic, I would definitely participate!

The most literary rent party ever. To benefit Charles Bock’s wife, who is suffering from leukemia. Love this idea.

The Paris Review blog profiles a new book about the window displays at Bergdorf Goodman’s.
