Hello, Stranger

2011 February 21

It’s been a while. And it’s not you, it’s me. I just can’t seem to find the time or, frankly, the motivation to blog regularly these days.

{Vintage Four Eyes necklace from Red Velvet}

(I really want this necklace).

Yes, I have been quite busy, but that’s no excuse. Really, I think that what it boils down to is a general lack of enthusiasm on my part lately. I’ve been blogging here for nearly a year, and my audience remains steady, but pretty small. While I try to present a unique take on both style and books, I find that the most successful blogs seem to focus on just one or the other–but I’m not a style blogger or book blogger. I’m both. And both is a tough thing to be when you’re trying to find a strong readership and create content that will please everyone. It can get discouraging when it seems that all people want are just a jumble of pretty pictures, outfit photos, or a kind of personal diary.

I’m planning some changes to the blog soon–a makeover, if you will. But, like everything else about my blog, I don’t want the changes to only be skin-deep. I want my content to be consistent, vibrant, relevant, and interesting, both to draw new readers and please my current readers.

This is where you come in–what do you want to see on this blog? What can I be doing better? What do you like that I shouldn’t change?

As always, I’m counting on your feedback–leave me a comment, send me an email, whatever you want to get the message across.

Lastly, thanks for reading. I really enjoy writing here, and it’s because of all of you that I keep coming back.

    Oh my gosh, you’re totally a inspiration to me, Jill. I love your stuff and I’m not even terribly fashion conscious. I’m not sure what I would add if I were you, but please keep up with the Fashion Book entries. They’re so creative and make me want to pick up the book. Keep up the fabulousness. You rock. :)

    Hi! I really like that quote! That is all 😉 (Blogging advice is not my specialty…but if I think of anything, I’ll let you know)

    I feel your pain! It is so hard for me to keep up with blogging that eventually I just don’t. I love your blog though! It is a great idea: combining what we put on our bodies with what we put in our minds.

    I love your Best of the Looks/Books features, your Fashion Book features (esp since you not only review the books but also dress the characters!), and some of your thoughts about things you’re considering buying and etc. And like Rebekah, it would be fun to see more of the entries where you discuss personal stuff–like when you go to 90s parties and wax philosophical about the clothes of the era and what it was like to grow up then. And maybe just more phototours–you live in NY after all! :) Let us live through you.

    Also: I really want that necklace too!

    ….don’t get discouraged, and keep fighting the good fight. That’s my best advice. If you keep putting pressure on yourself to make something great, you will likely just end up doing the opposite.

    Long time reader, first time commenter! I want to encourage you to keep going though! I love when you dress up characters from the books you read. It reminds me of when I used to do the same thing by pretending my Barbie’s were Baby-Sitter’s Club characters when I was little.

    Of course I would love more of the personal stuff since I miss you and get to live vicariously through you, so double bonus! I also really enjoy the fashion book features. You are very creative and it gives me inspiration to keep reading even when I get too busy and tempted to just veg in front of the TV. Hang in there, and keep inspiring your readers!
