Songs about Books

2011 March 22

Upon listening to a favorite song I hadn’t heard in a while today, it occurred to me that there are a lot of songs inspired by literature and writers. I thought I would put together a short list of some of my favorites:

“Ophelia” –Ambulance LTD

“Bukowski” –Modest Mouse

“Holland 1945” –Neutral Milk Hotel (inspired by The Diary of Anne Frank)

“Books Written for Girls”–Camera Obscura

“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” — Elton John (ok, this one’s a tiny bit of a stretch, but I couldn’t not post Elton on the Muppet Show)

What are some others?

“Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush is probably the most literal song inspired by a book that I’ve ever heard. It is AMAZING. (Although, if you don’t like Kate Bush, you *really* won’t like this song.)

In my eyes, she’s a goddess. Without her, there would be no Bjork, Florence, Bat for Lashes, etc., etc.

Great post! I love all of these songs! :-)
