Fashion Book: Ramona Quimby

2011 April 14

Growing up, my mom would take us to the local library, and along with a stack of books, I would take out videos of the Ramona tv show based on the books by Beverly Cleary. There were only a few episodes, so I saw them all many times. I don’t know what was so appealing to me about Ramona, but she was one of my favorites. We didn’t have much in common–she was outgoing and always getting into trouble, while I was quiet and did my best to not rock the boat. Maybe it was her clumsiness, or her high likelihood of getting herself into crazy situations–whatever it was, I liked her for it.

In honor of Beverly Cleary’s 95th birthday this week, I wanted to create a look Ramona might wear now–a little older, a little wiser, but still with the potential to try new things and get into a little bit of trouble.

I took those videos out all the time, too! Not to mention reading the books constantly. The movie that came out last year was actually pretty good, too.

Yesssss! Beverly Cleary is from the Portland area and is pretty much our biggest literary legend. The children’s libary in the main branch is called the Beverly Cleary Children’s Library, there’s a Beverly Cleary elementary school, etc. It is fun though because most of the street names/locations mentioned in the Ramona, Henry, etc. books are real Portland streets from her neighborhood–there’s a big neighborhood map in one of the library branches with the location of Cleary character houses and events placed accordingly.

Anyway–I can totally see Ramona wearing that outfit today. Awesome. Also, her skinny neck in that book cover is somewhat frightening.

Love this book! It sounds like we had a lot in common when we were little. Well, actually, I’m still like that–never trying to get in trouble. =) I’d wear this outfit in a heartbeat.

    Thanks!

Joey was a big fan. He listened to the books on tape before he could read.
