This week, I’m participating in Academichic’s “Dress Your Best” Week.I haven’t been much of a joiner in the blog community, but this is really a challenge that I believe in. I thought I could use a reminder myself of the parts of my body I like, especially since body image has been on my mind a good deal recently. The goal of the project is to build outfits around the parts of your body you love rather than worrying whether your legs are too pale or those jeans make your butt look big (just hypothetically).
Each blogger should choose five body parts to highlight. Because I don’t do many outfit posts on Looks & Books, I decided to highlight two things at once in this post–my hair and my legs.
I’ve been growing out my hair for the past couple years and I’ve found that I love having longer hair that I can play with and experiment. Yesterday I tried out the “Heidi” braids for the first time, and found them pretty easy and fun, and they did stay up and out of my face for the whole day, which is a big bonus. Instead of worrying that I look silly or strange in new hairstyles, I’ve been trying to embrace having long hair and have fun playing with the options.
Yesterday was the official first day of summer, and it happened to be a lovely day in Brooklyn–sunny and warm. I figured it was the right day to break out one of the two pairs of shorts I have. I purchased them at the tail end of last summer from Julie at Orchid Grey and was very happy to find they fit perfectly. I hadn’t worn shorts in at least six years prior to these, so it was a big step, and I only got to wear them a couple of times before it got too chilly. I have a tendency to hate on my legs more than most parts of my body, but lately, I’ve started showing them off more. Yes, they’re practically transparent they’re so pale, but that’s my skin, and it’s no use trying to rub orange-tinted lotions into them or cover them up.
This week, I happen to be reading a story collection by Daniel Orozco, Orientation. I’m about halfway through, and so far, I’m loving it. Expect details on a more thorough review soon.
