Fashion Book: You Deserve Nothing

2011 October 27

You Deserve Nothing is Alexander Maksik’s debut novel. It’s set in Paris, at the International School of France, where charismatic young teacher Will Silver has an affair with one of the students there, Marie de Clery. The book features both of these characters as narrators, as well as Gilad Fisher, one of Silver’s adoring students. The layered narration, Maksik’s elegant writing, and Gilad’s revelations make the book rise beyond the many cliches that may otherwise weigh it down. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it for any fan of literature.

The below look wasn’t created specifically with Marie in mind–she’s only 17, and her style is decidedly more sexy and young. I decided instead to put something together inspired by that paragon of chic–the French woman. I chose slim black cords, a Breton striped top, ballet flats, Ray Ban Wayfarers, a classic Chanel handbag, a cozy hat, simple jewelry, and a sophisticated cape.

You Deserve Nothing grows on you. The setting could be Paris 1968, Paris 2000, or Wall Street today. How do our choices determine the course of our lives and affect others? What is courage?
