Best of the Looks, Best of the Books 3/30/12

2012 March 30

Ah Spring is most definitely in the air, my friends. And with that comes…cold and allergy season! I don’t know about where you are, but New York is full of sick people. Birds chirping, flowers blooming, commuters coughing. Lovely. I have been sick now officially the entire month of March. Here’s hoping for a more healthful April!

Best of the Looks:

I know only yesterday I was hating on Zara, and now I’m posting a look composed of a Zara dress and jacket, but I love the combo of pretty yellow and the more scruffy elements of the army jacket and Doc Martens that Sincerely Jules pulls off so well.

This vintage floral frock at Sally Jane Vintage would be perfect for spring.

A Beautiful Mess shows a new way to style flat iron curls.

Fascinating tips on breaking in heels from the Beauty Department–never thought to stick a potato in there!

The fashion evolution of Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper)–I want all of her outfits.

Best of the Books:

The amazing Adrienne Rich passed away this week. Rest in peace, Adrienne.

Loved this piece at The Believer about getting an Emily  Dickinson tattoo.

HTMLGiant recommends 50 recent short stories.

Writers’ bedrooms. Most of them are so simple!

Kurt Vonnegut–indeed a real writer.

What great ideas about the heels! If only I had known so many pairs ago….. Happy Friday!

Love the “breaking in” post! Although it makes me wish we lived in the days where you had your shoes custom cobbled for you by hand! Perhaps that would eliminate some of our foot woes. Some wacky tips in there I will have to try–usually I just wear my shoes until they feel comfortable or add inserts but some of these methods seem faster. It reminds me of when I used to have to break in my pointe shoes when I was younger. It involved folding a la #5, dabbing with water, walking on half tiptoes, beating against door frames, and finally, in desperation, standing on the toe boxes hoping that doing so wouldn’t snap the shanks!

Also, please try to imagine me balancing on my tiptoes in a tutu if you need a laugh. :)
