The World from Another Angle

2012 May 21

Though my pants are still wet from this mornings very, very rainy commute, this past weekend was sunny perfection. I was fortunate to spend the majority of it outdoors, and the only negative about that was that I still don’t have a pair of sunglasses! Because I need to have prescription sunglasses, it’s not an easy process, but Joe got me a gift certificate for a local optician for part of my birthday present so I’m hoping to go pick some sunglasses out this weekend. I can hardly wait! It’s been so long since I’ve had sunglasses, I have no idea what to get. Here are a few nice pairs I like and would consider buying if they’re an option:

Ray Ban Cats $140

Kate Spade Lulu P: $148

Ray Ban Original Wayfarer: $150

Tory Burch TY7037: $149

Marc by Marc Jacobs MMJ 279/S : $98

What are your favorite sunglasses? Any recommendations?

I love the wayfarer shape. I was planning on getting fake ones, but tortoise shell. I also like the look of the cats or the marc jacobs.

Jill, I found myself in the same dilemma a few years ago back in Boston. Fortunately, the need for sunglasses wasn’t great because there wasn’t very much sun. However, one freakishly nice summer day, I was blinded and needed to take action. I happened to be in CVS and came across those clip on shades in a plastic sleeve for 15 bucks. I was desperate. I bought them. After skittering by the homeless guy outside the automatic doors, I turned to the side of the building, checked to see if anyone was looking, snapped on my new clip-on sunglasses, and turned toward the sun. Remarkable! They work AND they fit my glasses like a glove. Unless someone is actually talking to me face to face, they wouldn’t even know I was wearing them! Given my laziness about going to the eye doctor and the fact that I’m a cheapskate, I have yet to bite the bullet and get prescription sunglasses. The only trick is that now I have to avoid having conversations with people while standing in the sun so as to maintain my facade. It’s not easy. My Mom thinks they’re cool, though. She said that, if they flipped up, then they would be just like the ones my grandmother used to wear. So the retro factor should count for something, right?! 😉

I’d vote for the wayfarers. They’ll never go out of style. I got a pair three years ago and they’re still going strong.

I like the Wayfarers, too! I love the Marc version though how it’s a little chunky. I got a pair of prescription Wayferer-esque frames from Lookmatic for a really decent price. I think they’re the Peyton:

    Anyway, good luck!
