Fashion Book: Circle of Friends
Though most of the focus this week is on Gore Vidal’s passing, what has made me most sad is the death on Monday of Maeve Binchy, the Irish author of such classics as Light a Penny Candle, Tara Road, and Circle of Friends. Her books take me back to a very specific time in my life–a time when I loved to read, but wasn’t quite ready for heavy literature. I read at least five or six of her books (there are many) when I was a teenager. My first was probably Circle of Friends, because I loved the 1995 movie starring Minnie Driver and my crush, Chris O’Donnell. The book has a decidedly different (and more empowering!) ending, with Bennie, the “big boned” girl, choosing to be independent rather than forgive her love (who’s cheated on her with one of her best friends). Anyway, I loved the books because they were heartfelt and full of drama, the kind of drama a 15 year old girl revels in. Her characters were big-hearted and simple, and all of her stories took place in a picturesque, bucolic Ireland. There are definitely times I still find myself wanting to curl up with a nice uncomplicated book like these–and there’s no reason why I can’t. I just normally don’t. Maybe I’ll take this occasion to do just that this summer…
Anyway, as a small tribute to Ms. Binchy, I thought I would put together an outfit for Benny, the sweet, good-natured heroine of Circle of Friends, and her two-timing harlot friend, Nan. Enjoy!
