Today is the worst kind of day. It’s so humid outside the air sticks to you like a blanket, and it’s just as hot. Inside my office, the air conditioning is unmerciful. I am in a cardigan and dress, with an airline blanket draped over my bare legs. It’s like a temperature limbo–how can your body and mind reach equilibrium when you can’t find a happy medium, a comfortable state of being? On top of that, it feels like I’ve spent the entire summer in a state of perpetual waiting…though I always mourn summer’s passing, this summer in particular I am ready for Fall, ready for the wedding, ready for everything that comes along with it.

As you can probably tell, the gloom of the weather is getting to me today. And when things make me gloomy, I like to think of things that make me happy (like eating dark chocolate peanut butter cups–I may have had too many already today). So, here’s an abbreviated list (I guess I’m into lists this week) of the things I’m most looking forward to this fall:

  • Marrying my best friend and only love
  • Celebrating with nearly all of my closest friends and family
  • Taking a much-needed vacation
  • Wearing my wedding shoes (finally!)
  • Hot cider
  • Attending two weddings of wonderful friends–one in Sacramento, one in Vermont
  • Reading (I just checked out The Age of Miracles and The Anthologist from the library, and am going to buy Michael Chabon’s new novel, Telegraph Avenue, to read on the honeymoon)
  • More writing
  • Boots
  • Scarves
  • Jacket weather
  • Sleeping with a blanket on the bed
  • Walking Chief through the leaves
  • Baking (it’s too hot to turn on the stove in the summer!)
  • Using all of our new kitchen gear
  • Long walks
  • Halloween
  • Pumpkins
  • Red wine
  • Seeing Louis C.K. do stand-up
  • Hot coffee
  • Thanksgiving
What’s on your Fall Anticipation list?

I despise humidity and sweat the instant I stand in the sun even when there is no humidity, so I’m one of those weird people who thinks of summer and says, “Eh.”

I love fall: Looking forward to all the great eats, cooler days and nights, less humidity, absence of mosquitoes so I can sit on my porch at dusk, sweaters, fleecy fabrics (both in clothing and blanket forms!), hot tea in the afternoons, and the feeling of back-to-schoolness that always gives me the enthusiasm I need to get motivated with writing projects. Corny: my one-year wedding anniversary, hurrah!

And of course, I’m very excited to be attending your wedding on the FIRST DAY OF FALL. Excitement! What excellent timing! :)

I love your list! So many great things to look forward to! :) And add to that being able to sit in your office without wrapping yourself up like a squaw. I just got an image of you bundled up and was appalled and amused simultaneously. And I LOVE the photo you chose for this post! It’s so enchanting.

Hot coffee in the morning!! (And also the marriage thing.) Yay weddings! (And our wedding will also have hot cider, so…double win?)
