The Honeymooners
Not to be a jerk about it, but I’m going to be in Hawaii four days from now. On my honeymoon. If there’s ever been anything more awesome, I don’t know about it.
I’ve never been to Hawaii, so I am obviously very excited about it, but I’m also excited about the prospect of a vacation that has been designed with the sole purpose of relaxing in a beautiful place. Really excited.
In preparation for my trip, I thought long and hard about which books I wanted to bring along with me, since I’m planning on spending a good chunk of time reading on the beach or by the pool. I settled on Telegraph Avenue even before my book club chose it as our October selection, and I also decided to finally delve into Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild. I’ve been a fan of Strayed’s “Dear Sugar” column for a long time, and I’ve been really looking forward to this book. I think I was saving it as a treat for myself–it’s actually been on my bookshelf for a few months now.
Do you choose special books for vacation reading?
More to the point, this post will be my last until I return in October. From here on in, it’s all about getting married, being married, and being in Hawaii. Have a good two weeks everyone!

For vacation, I choose a book (well, let’s be honest, books), that are a little bit more fluffy than what I normally read but not quite “beach reads”. Although for some reason I’m always in the middle of a non-fiction book before I leave and bring it with me to finish.
Have a great time in Hawaii! And of course, have a great time with all of that wedding stuff too
.
Wild IS SO GOOD! you will not regret that decision, i promise. And CONGRATS TO YOU AND JOE!!! Also, have fun in Hawaii (it’s almost impossible not to).
Aw, congrats! You’ll have such a wonderful time! And yeah, I’m a little jealous…but mostly just happy for you.
I think sooo much about what books I’ll take with me before I go on vacation. Sounds like you chose a couple of good ones. If you’re looking for something about Hawaii, I just read “Moloka’i”by Alan Brennert, which is a historical fiction novel about Hawaii’s leper population from the turn of the century through the 1950′s. It’s much better than the cover makes it look!
“Not to be a jerk about it, but.” HA! Best first line.
AHHHHH SO EXCITED FOR YOU AND JOE I HOPE IT’S ALL AMAAAAAZING AHHHHHHH! Seriously, just so happy for you both.
I mean, and for Chief too, obviously. I also fully approve of both of your vacation books; both books I’m dying to read, as well. For me, I always get super excited about choosing “vacation reading,” and then almost every single time, hardly have any time to actually read. And I always seem to overestimate how much reading I can actually get done on planes before I just get tired and cranky and bust out the iPod instead. But, alas.
ENJOY HAWAII AND LIFE!
