Shopping List: Banana Republic

2013 January 9

One of my Christmas gifts this year was a gift card to Banana Republic. I haven’t used it yet because I like to savor the many possibilities a gift card affords. Of course, this has the down side of causing a weird paralysis in me. I have a gift card, so I have to choose the perfect thing, the item that will complete my closet. Something I’ll wear all the time and never get tired of. Something comfortable but pretty and fun.

Geez, relax, it’s just a gift card, I tell myself. But I still have a need to agonize and obsess over it for a little while. I’m thinking of taking a walk over on my lunch break tomorrow, so I thought it would be useful to put together a little shopping list of potential items, just to help me get a handle on things.

Does anyone else have a weird tendency to obsess over gift cards?

Stripe Skirt: $89.95

 Diamond jacquard pullover: $79.50

Pleated Fran skirt: $89.50

Carlie pointed toe flat: $110

Ivory silk utility shirt: $54.99 (on sale)

Anything at Banana catching your eye lately?

I don’t typically obsess over gift cards – I usually just lose them! It’s infuriating, but happens more than I care to admit.

Banana’s got some great stuff right now. I’m been eyeing the striped skirt you posted first, and also a lot of their black and white polka dot tops. Have fun shopping!

I totally do this! I invest them with all this undue psychological significance, like, “With this gift card I will buy the cashmere cardigan that changes EVERYTHING!!”

Um…I can’t tell you how much better it makes me feel to know I’m not the only one that feels this way about gift cards! I carry them around like a little treasure…hesitant to spend them until I have JUST THE RIGHT THING.
You are definitely not alone on this one, Jill.

    Good luck!

Me me me! True story: I got a Bed, Bath & Beyond giftcard when I was moving in with a few friends almost three years ago. They already had everything I could possibly need at the apartment (or if they didn’t, I bought it elsewhere), and I didn’t want to waste it on something stupid, so I still have it. Thank you for having gift cards that don’t expire, BB&B!

But now I’m glad I kept it, since I’ll be moving again soon and will actually have a real shopping list and things I need.

I know that they are gift cards so it’s okay to buy a gift to yourself, but I have a hard time doing that.

I don’t shop at Banana but I like that red skirt so much! Adorable! The sweater is also nice. Who doesn’t need more sweaters, I say.

I actually am the opposite: I love to use gift cards ASAP. The minute I get one, I am like SHOPPING NOW HURRAH! Amazon gift cards disappear in minutes in a frenzy of clicking, and I run to Target immediately to fill my cart with ALL THE THINGS. Maybe it’s because I don’t tend to get them for places full of beautiful things like BR? Or because I am, by nature, someone who never wants to put off an excuse to shop? 😉

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what kind of goodies you get.

I vote for the striped skirt. I also share the tendency to obsess over gift cards – at one stage in my life not using any I had received in the past 2.5 years (waiting for the perfect thing to buy that was worth it) until the gift givers had to stage a mini-intervention. Now I try to use them immediately to stave off a similar episode and treat myself to the spontaneity that the card allows me. Gifts cards do offer some interesting psychological drama, I guess :)
