Beach Vacation Essentials

Joe and I are taking a road trip (with Chief!) to North Carolina for the 4th of July and I’m looking forward to some quality beach time. We are renting a beach house along with a group of Joe’s college friends on the Outer Banks. I’ve never been to North Carolina, so I’m looking forward to exploring a new place, and also relaxing–catching up on reading, doing some writing, and just hanging out in general.

As the trip draws closer, though, I’m realizing that my relaxation wardrobe is pretty sad. I don’t get much beach time anymore, living in New York, so I’m in need of an update. Here’s a few things I’d like to get before our trip:

  1. A Sun Hat

I have skin so fair it’s basically translucent, so any extra coverage is a huge help. I’ve long been in need of a sun hat, but have put off actually buying one since I won’t get TOO much wear out of it. But a few days on the beach is the perfect excuse. Here are a few cute options:
  2. Espadrilles

I’m all set on the flip-flop front, but what I’m lacking is a pair of cute, functional, and comfy shoes I can walk around town all day in. Flip flops are great for the beach, but they’re not very supportive when you’re exploring town or doing some shopping for longer periods of time. Here are some on my wish list:
  3. Beach Cover Up

Again with the fair skin–I like to lay out in the sun, but my skin begins to feel toasty pretty quickly, so having a cover up I can toss on when needed is a good thing to have. Some I’m considering:
  4. Tank Top

Most of my basic ribbed tank tops I wear for working out, so they are pretty beat up. Since I don’t wear tank tops to the office, I rarely buy them. I’d like to invest in a basic tank or two for lounging around the beach house. You all know what those look like. I find Target and Old Navy are great, cheap resources to stock up on these.
  5. Easy Sundress

You can never have too many of these, in my opinion. They’re perfect for hot days or summer evenings, and they can easily be transitional pieces for the cooler seasons when paired with tights, boots, and cardigans. I could use a few more since most of mine pre-date Obama’s presidency at this point:

YAY to sunhats! I have a narrow-brimmed one that I love for the beach or other outings. You can certainly get lots of use out of a cute hat–wear it around the city and look adorable as you protect that lovely alabaster skin of yours. (Remember, it’s alabaster!)

I love the yellow-striped espadrilles and the tangerine-printed cover-up. Those would look fabulous on you! I also think that J. Crew dress would be adorable for you.

Also, I just read this trick for protecting your smart phone on the beach: put it in a small ziplock baggie to protect it from sand and water. The plastic bag lets you still use the phone, apparently. MINDBLOWN.

My only other essentials are a packet of face wipes for dabbing at sweaty skin–I like Yes to Cucumbers, which are great for sensitive skin and removing eye makeup and smell lovely–a sturdy tote–the kind with a stiff bottom that stands upright to keep it from getting full of sand/spilling everywhere–and a good mineral sunscreen that’s suitable for sensitive skin so I can use it on my face. Also a mineral SPF lip balm.

    Have fun, beach bum! :)
