Wish List: Back to School Shopping

2013 August 20

Though it’s been more than a few years since I’ve been in any kind of school situation, every time September rolls around, I get the urge to go back to school shopping. Now, you might think, “nah, you probably just want to go shopping for new fall clothes,” and you’d be right, but back to school shopping is different. Back to school shopping is more than just shopping for a new season–it’s shopping for those few particular outfits that are going to really make an impact, that are going to show who you are during the school year, that are going to be comfortable and cool.

So what if you’re not going back to school? It might still be fun to go “back to school” shopping and put together that totemic “first day of school” outfit (I can still remember some of the ones I wore to school through the years) along with a few other new outfits. Since we can’t all go shopping together, I put together what I would buy for my first day of school now, plus a few supplemental back to school items.

First Day of School

It’s important not to appear that you’re trying too hard on the first day of school, so a good pair of jeans and a pretty sweater are perfect. Some fun earrings add color and ankle booties add some cool. Also, gotta have a leather tote for all your new notebooks and pens (another favorite part of going back to school) and a pair of new frames so you won’t be squinting at the board (do they even use blackboards anymore?).
A little something extra:
For rainy days waiting at the bus stop: Hunter rain boots $140
For a chilly classroom: J. Crew Factory waffle crewneck sweater $72.50
For sunny days: Caslon t-shirt $15
For a class presentation: LOFT floral full skirt $29.99
For the geography test: Rooby’s Map of the World Skirt $120
For your pencils: Out of Print Edgar Allen Poe-ka Dots Pouch $12
What’s on your back to school shopping list?

This is fantastic. I’d love to go back to school shopping, too! Since I had a uniform for so many years, back-to-school shopping was more about supplies. I was thinking about how every year meant a new backpack or messenger bag. I really like this one.
In high school we also got to choose our shoes (within certain parameters)– oh, the heady freedom. Ironically pretty much all the shoes we wore in high school– oxfords mostly, with a medium heel, would probably be back in style now.
These actually look like an awesome high-heeled version of my grade school shoes, which I detested. Go figure.

Those shoes are so cute! I love that they come in so many different colors too. Your eight-year-old self would be appalled, I’m sure. :)

I’m totally going back-to-school shopping, because AUTUMN CLOTHING! ACCESSORIES! PAPER GOODS! (Plus, since I started working at home, I’ve bought so few clothes/accessories that AREN’T ortho-friendly shoes that I feel I deserve it.) I already started my Fall ’13 wardrobe with a ridiculously cute lightweight sweater that has a bunny on it.

I think it is because I too spent 12 years having to wear uniforms to school every day and now I’m enacting a ritual I never got to participate in as a youth. I’m not sorry. :)

    I love those earrings!
