Things That I Bought That I Love

2013 October 30

Back in the day, before The Mindy Project or Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? , Mindy Kaling had a blog called “Things That I Bought That I Love.” (It’s now been revived on her website, but it’s been idle for a while. I guess she’s busy). It was basically just posts about…things she bought that she loved. Simple and effective.

So I’m stealing her idea and telling you about the most recent things I’ve bought that I love. Mostly because I’m very tired this week and probably getting sick and don’t have much energy for talking about intelligent subjects.

Things That I Bought That I Love:

Last year, as a Christmas gift, I received my first designer purse– a lovely purple Kate Spade satchel. It’s a great size and so comfortable to carry and I love the fun pop of purple (and the polka dot lining!). But I found myself carrying my purse AND a separate tote bag for my umbrella, lunch, book, and whatever else flotsam and jetsam I accrued during the day. I left the bag behind a couple of times, and mostly just felt like a bag lady. My shoulders were not happy. So I started dreaming of a leather tote bag, the best of both worlds–large enough to carry all my stuff around but still pretty and chic enough to take to the office. Well, the Goodwinn tote hit every note, AND it’s beautiful. It stores all my stuff, isn’t massive, and has a good shape. I can even carry my laptop in it, which I don’t do too often, but it’s nice to have the option. I went back and forth for a long time about this purchase (and waited for a 30% off sale before pulling the trigger) but it’s made me happier and my everyday life easier. Definitely worth the little extra money in the long run!
I bought these booties just about a week and a half ago and I LOVE them. I’ve been craving a pair of booties for a few months–I already have tan and black ankle booties, but both pairs have a significant heel, making them impractical for walking around the city. What I really wanted was a flat pair of boots that I could wear with dresses and jeans during the cold months that were cute AND comfortable. The pair that I got (after obsessing and pinning about every pair of flat booties I could find) is Clarks, a brand widely known for their comfort, but not necessarily their style. They’ve come a long way, though, and these booties are seriously cute. AND from the very first day I wore them, super comfortable. This is one of the only pairs of shoes I’ve bought in recent memory that I haven’t needed to break in. I would highly recommend these if you’re in the market for some comfy and cute booties and are willing to pay a little extra for that comfort–living in the city, shoes are something I’ve learned you have to take seriously and buy the good stuff.
I’ve had my current winter coat for 4 winters now and it’s seen better days. The main issue, though, is that my darling puggle chewed a large hole clean through one of the pockets, which means I can’t use it for gloves or anything else, which is a problem. So one of my wish list items was a new winter coat this year. I swear I didn’t have an agenda when I wandered into Zara on my lunch break Monday–I was actually looking for a part of my Halloween costume…though I didn’t find that, I DID find a lot of other things I wanted. Including every coat they had in the store. The one I settled on is a puffy jacket, which I’ve found to be warmer than wool, but it’s still sleek. It has a lot of cool design elements, like zippers on the sleeves, a belted waist, and a snuggly faux fur collar. I also really like the camel color. I tried it on in the store and decided that I wasn’t going to be able to find something like that elsewhere, so I was spontaneous and bought it. BUT I still haven’t taken the tags off because I’m on the fence about it. I’ve never owned any outerwear from Zara, so I’m not sure of how warm it will actually be. And though the buckles and buttons and zippers all LOOK really cool, I’m a tiny bit worried it might take me 15 minutes to put on the coat..or take it off. So, this one remains in the shopping bag until it gets a little colder and I can really see what it’s made of. Stay tuned.
Have you guys bought anything recently that you love? Brag about it in the comments!

Great post! I might have to copy your idea. Glad you treated yourself to that Jcrew bag. I splurged on a Madewall bag this fall as a b-day present…and I’m with you on the pleasure of just having one carry-all for work/life/commute/etc.

Bags are way more important than most people give them credit for.

I met your tote in person and it’s fabulous! I love the coat too–it looks warm without being bulky, like some puffy coats can be. (I’m thinking of that episode of Seinfeld when George wears the enormous puffy coat…)

The Clarks are super cute too. It’s one of the brands I’ve found to be pretty stylish AND easy on the feet, especially recently as they have gotten cuter styles. Quality footwear is always worth the price because it lasts forever and it’s kind to your feet. I can’t wait to see what outfits you pair those with. Now I want boots….! :)

    Hi there!
You don’t know me but I stumbled across your blog while doing very important ankle boot research (!) as I was myself considering buying those super cool Clarks…
May I firstly compliment you on your good taste…
They’re really cool in photos, but I have no idea what they look like on!
If you have any photos of yourself wearing them please put them up so I can see!
(An odd request, but I’m not an internet stalker with a shoe fetish, I swear..)

    Thanx!!! :)
